How to Minimize Large Pores for a Smoother Complexion

You’re not happy about those large pores staring back at you whenever you glance in the mirror. And now, finally, you’re ready to do something about it.

You’re not alone. The causes of large pores are numerous and common:

  • Genetics (this is the biggest factor, and for obvious reasons, the most difficult to control)
  • Acne and acne scars
  • Hormonal changes (especially during puberty, but later in adulthood as well)
  • Sun damage
  • Overactive sebaceous glands (oil-producing glands), which are common in people with oily skin types
  • Loss of collagen and elastin in the skin due to aging

To treat large pores, focus on the factors that you can control. And focus on the face, where pores tend to be larger to begin with and where others are more likely to notice them.

How to Minimize Pores on Your Face

You can try any of these measures to minimize pores on your face. Or try them all and compare the results.

Botox® Injections (Yes, Really)

Botox Cosmetic can treat large pores.

Yes, really. Botox doesn’t get enough credit for off-label uses like this, which makes sense: Many providers don’t like using Botox off-label. But if you can find a trained provider with a deep understanding of Botox injection sites, the skill to minimize Botox side effects (like muscle weakness and overactive bladder) caused by poor injection technique, and a willingness to use Botox for pore control, you’ll be in good hands.

Chemical Peels

This professional exfoliation and skin resurfacing procedure uses salicylic acid or glycolic acid to cleanse pores of dirt, oil, dead skin cells, and other contaminants. It doesn’t actually shrink enlarged pores, but it does make them less noticeable.

Microneedling

Microneedling is another professional skincare procedure that can restore the top layers of skin while improving overall skin health. Unlike other procedures, it can also efficiently target individual pores for unclogging.

Cosmetic Laser Treatment

Cosmetic laser treatment is the third professional skincare treatment worth pursuing if you’re concerned about the size of your pores. Like chemical peels, cosmetic laser treatments resurface the top layers of skin while removing harmful contaminants that increase pores’ apparent size along with the risk of acne breakouts and skin infections.

Topical Sun Protection

You don’t need a professional to protect your skin from the sun. Just use sunscreen whenever you plan to be out in the sun for an extended period of time, ideally SPF 30 or better. And use an SPF moisturizer (15 or better) for everyday activity.

In-Home Skincare Routine

Your daily skincare routine can incorporate a range of products approved by the Food and Drug Administration. If you’re not sure where to begin, speak to your dermatologist. In general, oil-free products containing retinol or beta hydroxy acids are best for reducing apparent pore size.

Dermal Filler Injections?

A word about dermal filler injections and enlarged pores. Dermal fillers and Botox have some overlap as far as indications go, but it’s important to know that dermal filler injection is generally not indicated to treat enlarged pores. This isn’t to say the procedure doesn’t have many benefits — just that it can’t cure every single skin complaint under the sun.
