Coolsculpting® or Laser Lipo: What Is Right for You?

Laser liposuction and CoolSculpting® are both minimally invasive alternatives to traditional liposuction, a more invasive surgical procedure for fat removal.

While evidence is mixed with regards to their long-term relative weight loss efficacy, “laser lipo” and CoolSculpting are both less risky and better tolerated than traditional liposuction. They have fewer contraindications as well, which means they’re appropriate for many patients for whom traditional liposuction isn’t advisable.

But is one better than the other? Read on to learn the key differences between laser lipo and CoolSculpting and what you should keep in mind when choosing between the two.

CoolSculpting or Laser Lipo: Key Differences

Both CoolSculpting and laser lipo are shown to be effective in reducing fat and promoting weight loss. They’re different in several key respects, however:

  • Treatment Method: Laser lipo uses targeted lasers to melt fat inside the body. CoolSculpting freezes fat from above.
  • Incision: Laser lipo requires a small incision above the treated area. CoolSculpting doesn’t require an incision at all.
  • Cost: CoolSculpting typically costs $2,000 to $4,000, though actual pricing can vary. Laser lipo costs a bit more, typically $2,500 to $6,000.
  • Efficacy: Laser lipo eliminates more fat, on average. It can remove 20% to 40% of fat volume in the treated area, whereas CoolSculpting may remove 15% to 20% of fat volume. For this and other reasons, laser lipo is recommended for people with greater fat removal needs. Keep in mind too that these percentages can vary widely depending on the individual case and the specific area being treated.
  • Time to Notice Results: CoolSculpting’s results can take a month or two to become obvious. Laser lipo’s results are apparent within days.
  • Number of Treatments: Laser lipo generally requires just one treatment, though longer and more invasive than CoolSculpting. It’s difficult to determine how many sessions of CoolSculpting may be required to achieve desired results.

What Is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting uses a special device to freeze subcutaneous fat within a predetermined treatment area without damaging the skin. The frozen fat cells die and are reabsorbed by the body over a period of several months.

CoolSculpting doesn’t require a surgical incision and can be performed in a medical office without anesthesia. (There is some discomfort involved, but few patients describe the procedure as painful.) Recovery time is minimal and side effects are few. Procedure duration is relatively short as well, typically 30 to no more than 60 minutes per area.

What Is Laser Liposuction?

Laser liposuction is a low- or no-contact surgical procedure that utilizes controlled laser pulses to melt fat beneath the skin.

Also known as laser lipolysis, laser lipo requires only a small incision. The clinician inserts a small, flexible laser fiber into the incision and liquefies the fat within the predetermined treatment area. They then use a cannula (a small tube) to suck out the melted fat. They close the incision and the procedure is over. Because the targeted fat is no longer in the body, the results are immediately visible.

Laser lipo can be performed in a medical office setting under local anesthesia and has a relatively quick recovery time in comparison to more invasive surgeries. However, laser lipo recovery time is longer than CoolSculpting. Patients should expect to avoid certain activities and modify others for several days after the procedure.

Like CoolSculpting, the side effects of laser lipo are minimal. They may include bruising, soreness, swelling, and firmness. Most dissipate within a few days, but firmness may persist for several months as the body’s natural healing processes produce collagen around the treated area. For best results and to minimize side effects, work with a provider who has completed an accredited cosmetic laser and certification training course and, ideally, advanced cosmetic laser training as well.

Long-Term Results and Maintenance

The long-term results of both laser lipo and CoolSculpting can vary depending on the individual patient and their commitment to maintaining a healthy lifestyle after the procedure.

Laser lipo is generally considered to provide more durable results compared to CoolSculpting. The fat cells that are removed during the procedure are permanently eliminated, meaning they cannot grow back. However, patients must still maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine to prevent the remaining fat cells from expanding and undermining the results.

Most patients who undergo laser lipo see lasting improvements in the treated areas for several years, provided they do not experience significant weight fluctuations. Some may require touch-up treatments every few years to address any new fat accumulation in the treated areas.

The results of CoolSculpting are also generally long-lasting, but may not be as durable as laser lipo. While the fat cells that are frozen and eliminated do not return, the remaining fat cells can still expand if the patient gains weight. This means that CoolSculpting patients must be diligent about maintaining their weight and body composition after the procedure.

Many CoolSculpting patients find that they need to undergo multiple treatment sessions to achieve their desired results. Additionally, some may require periodic "touch-up" treatments every 1-2 years to address any new fat accumulation in the treated areas.

Importance of Lifestyle Maintenance

Regardless of the procedure chosen, it is crucial that patients commit to a healthy lifestyle after their treatment. This includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, and overall healthy habits. Failure to maintain a healthy lifestyle can lead to the reaccumulation of fat in the treated areas, undermining the long-term benefits of the procedure.

Patients should work closely with their healthcare provider to develop a comprehensive plan for maintaining their results, which may include follow-up treatments, dietary guidance, and exercise recommendations. By prioritizing a healthy lifestyle, patients can maximize the long-term benefits of their laser lipo or CoolSculpting procedure.

It's also essential to note that individual results may vary, and it's crucial to consult with a qualified healthcare professional to determine the best course of treatment for specific needs and circumstances.
