What Are the Most Common Filler Lip Shapes?

Quality lip augmentation is not just about adding volume to the lips or achieving a vague desired outcome, like “Kylie Jenner’s pouty lips.” It’s a sophisticated, finely tuned procedure that subtly but noticeably enhances natural-looking lips.

The most common lip augmentation procedure involves dermal filler lip injections. This versatile, flexible procedure can achieve a range of desired lip shapes and effects.

Let’s review the most sought-after filler lip shapes and the fillers that trained aestheticians and plastic surgeons use to achieve them.

Filler Lip Shapes: Which Is Right for You?

Some of the most popular lip shapes that can be achieved with injectable fillers include:

  • Cupid: This look accentuates and volumizes the Cupid’s bow feature, which defines the curvature of the upper lip around the philtrum. The result is a sexy, mysterious look.
  • Full upper lip: Also known as the “Hollywood lip,” this lip shape increases volume throughout the upper lip, resulting in a signature pout.
  • Full lower lip: Also known as the “Pearlique lip,” this shape increases volume in the lower lip and helps reduce the age-related lines that can develop below the corners of the mouth.
  • Rubina: This look volumizes both lips from corner to corner without significantly changing the lips’ anatomy. The effect is a fuller, more alluring lip shape.
  • Classic: This look adds definition and helps smooth lines around the lips. Like Rubina, it doesn’t significantly alter the lips’ preexisting shape or dramatically increase volume.

Common Types of Dermal Fillers for Lip Enhancements

Filler lip shape is not the only consideration for patients evaluating the best types of lip fillers for their aesthetic needs. But the lips do respond to different hyaluronic acid fillers (also known as HA fillers) in different ways, meaning that certain fillers do better to achieve certain desired lip shapes than others.

These are the most common types of dermal fillers for lip shape enhancements:

  • Restylane® Silk. This versatile formulation is useful for delicate applications, such as fine lines around the lips.
  • Juvederm® Volbella. This popular Juvederm formulation has more heft, making it an ideal choice in procedures meant to give the lips volume.
  • Juvederm XC. This formulation is ideal for achieving a fuller, poutier appearance while maintaining lips’ natural hydration.
  • Restylane-L. This formulation has more structural support than others, making it a good “base” for future lip treatments.
  • Restylane Kysse. Restylane’s newest lip enhancement formulation volumizes and softens to produce a natural, kissable effect.

HA fillers are not only the type of dermal filler used in lip augmentation procedures. However, because they’re relatively short-acting (typically 12 months or less) and easily reversible, they’re preferred by patients who don’t want “permanent” or difficult-to-correct solutions.

Achieve Your Desired Results: Get the Lip Shape You Want

Dermal filler lip injection is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that takes less than an hour to complete and presents low risk of serious side effects.

Despite the procedure’s relative ease, the desired results are not guaranteed. You’re more likely to see the results you want when you:

  • Work with a board-certified medical provider who has completed a comprehensive course of dermal filler training
  • Avoid providers who promise “final” results after a single office visit
  • Return for additional touch-ups as necessary in the months following your initial procedure
  • Avoid permanent lip fillers unless you’re willing to undergo a second procedure to remove them should the results no longer suit your needs
  • Heed your provider’s advice around preparing for your procedure and follow all post-procedure instructions for a smooth recovery
